Photos - larger picture version
The photographs on this page were taken in the southern Dordogne and northern Lot-et-Garonne region.
La Roque Gageac

Regularly voted as one of the most beautiful villages in France, La Roque Gageac nestles under the cliffs on the Dordogne River looking exactly as it must have looked hundreds of years ago. There is an interesting tropical garden planted among the paths that wind up the hill through the village
Canoeing on the Dordogne river

Canoeing on the Dordogne river is an activity not to be missed if you are in the region. Sailing passed quaint towns and the beautiful countryside along the Dordogne, you row in the same direction as the flow to avoid the need for hard effort. See Canoeing on the Dordogne.
Duras

Duras is a pleasant town to the west of the region, most famous for its wine.
Hay Bales

Hay bales are one of the most common sights in the northern Lot et Garonne...
Monpazier hall

There are hundreds of pictures of Monpazier around - not surprising because Monpazier is an amazingly authentic medieval town. This picture is of the underside of Monpazier hall roof - the 'halle' is in the central square, and in the hall you can still see the original 'witches cauldrons' used hundreds of years ago for measuring quantities of oil and wine. See Towns
Lake near Villereal

Not very exciting I suppose but this lake, popular for fishing, is close to our house at Villereal and looks different through the seasons and usually has a mirror flat surface.
Sarlat

This is a detail of a wall at Sarlat. Strictly speaking Sarlat is slightly north of the Dordogne River so should be featured in our north of the dordogne website, but really most visitors to any part of the Dordogne end up spending a day at Sarlat so it is also included here. Sarlat is the unofficial heart of the Dordogne, and has an astonishing mix of medieval and renaissance buildings and streets to explore.
Beynac

Beynac is another attractive village along the banks of the Dordogne River, with Beynac castle itself offering views across miles of countryside.
Chateau Bonaguil

It is never easy to choose a favourite castle, but Chateau Bonaguil rates extremely highly in the list of possibilities. Do not miss it if you come to the region! See also Chateaux page.
Still Canoeing on the Dordogne river

Canoeing on the Dordogne river again, this time approaching Chateau Beynac.
Jardin de Sardy

Limeuil

Limeuil 'beach' will help keep the children cool on a hot day, and Limeuil itself is a lovely village deserving a wander. There is a parc at Limeuil which is lovely and cool in the summer and offers great views across the river and countryside of the Dordogne. It is at Limeuil that the Dordogne and Vézere Rivers meet.
Monpazier Flower Market

Monpazier flower festival is held once a year and brings a lively splash of colour and interest to the town centre. See Towns for Monpazier and other towns in the region.
Pigeonnier

Pigeonniers are one of the 'landmark buildings' of northern Lot et Garonne. See Ancient buildings in Dordogne and Lot et Garonne.
Sarlat

I mentioned Sarlat above. so at danger of repeating myself - Sarlat is one of the most beautiful, and overcrowded, towns in the region, in France, in Europe, in the world. Don't miss it - spring and autumn are best.
La Roque Gageac

La Roque Gageac, looking its usual picture potcard self.
Bees

Swarm of bees. Picture is here for the simple reason that it was the first time I had taken a picture of a swarm of bees.
Chateau Beynac

Detail of Chateau Beynac, at the top of the hill in Beynac.
Eymet

This is a detail of a house in the central square at Eymet. Eymet is a typical bastide town of the north Lot et Garonne area.
Issigeac

Issigeac is one of the least restored, least spoilt towns in the area. Not a bastide town but certainy medieval, with narrow winding lanes and houses leaning perilously towards each other. See Towns
Monpazier

I think I have already mentioned Monpazier...
Maison en empilage

'Maisons en empilage' are some of the oldest houses in the area, and are mostly found in a small region along the River Dropt. This one is near Villereal. See Ancient Buildings for other examples of ancient architecture.
Sunflowers

Fields of sunflowers are one of the trademarks of the Lot et Garonne region. Everybody loves them, of course.
Pujols

The pumpkin fair at Pujols is held every year. Pujols is a small but perfectly formed village just south of Villeneuve-sur-Lot. See Towns
Field in Lot et Garonne

Ploughed field in Lot et Garonne.
Green frog

We get all manner of wildlife - this green frog is very small, and likes to climb trees and make a lot of noise.
